As part of the Product Development Group, the Mechanical Design Engineer will work as an integral part of Engineering team, planning and designing advanced additive manufacturing machines and other mechanically functioning equipment.
This position will be responsible for carrying out duties of the Engineering department, including design, research, prototyping, engineering documentation, estimating and process improvement.
A candidate for the Mechanical Design Engineer position will work independently and in team settings, and possesses strong analytical, communication, and CAD skills, reporting directly to the Product Development Manager.
*Responsibilities and Duties:* * Own design activities through life of development programs (from concept through detail design to production release).
* Manage the development and implementation of new designs through design analysis, risk mitigation, review of safety factors & stack-ups, reliability tools, schedules, and design reviews.
* Prepares needed engineering calculations to support design development product specifications.
* Prepare complete drawings using SolidWorks 2023.
This is to include full assembly and sub-assembly drawings, machining details for fabrication, and pneumatic schematics.
* Participates in engineering department projects including new machine design developments, improvements and refinements to existing proprietary equipment and assigned design projects requiring solutions and suggestions of functional concept.
* Participates in engineering department pricing estimate review for cost of engineering and final sales pricing * Independently complete moderately complex, accurate, sub-system analyses using two or more of the following tools: FEA, Motion, CFD, heat transfer, or other software.
* Prepares written literature for designed machinery to cover operator’s running instructions, plant maintenance of equipment and operational trouble-shooting for customer’s assistance.
* Assists with start-up, running, trouble-shooting, and “debugging” of new and existing machine designs in the shop environment.
* Analyzes, interprets, and recommends modifications to new or existing designs to suit special regulations and specifications.
* Coordinate with internal and external resources to manage system builds and ensure timelines and performance criteria are met.
* Coordinate with controls group during design and start up phases of projects.
* Interface with R&D, Customers, Marketing, Manufacturing and Suppliers to discover and trial new components or production processes with the intent of improving performance or quality, reducing cost, and improving manufacturing efficiencies.
* Keep current with technology/engineering advances to deliver best available technology to the project.
* Effectively manage projects, coordinate activities and communicate progress to key stakeholders.
*Desired Skills & Experience:* Applicants are expected to describe, document, or demonstrate; strong problem solving and critical thinking skills, excellent organization and time management skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively with team members, excellent writing, and communication skills.
* Experience with precision industrial automation machinery, skilled with sizing actuators, beam sizes and selection, general machine operation and design, understanding of linear guidance, and understanding of interface with electric and pneumatic controls.
* Proficiency with Solidworks 3D CAD software.
* Knowledge of material manufacturing processes concerning machining, welding, fabrications, polymers, and electro-mechanical assembly processing.
* Ability to work productively and maintain project timelines with minimal supervision.
* Knowledge and experience in component technical drawing reviews.
* Experienced in supplier selection, evaluation, creating supplier relationships, and working directly with suppliers to achieve material requirements.
* Able to manage expectations (market conditions, lead-times, options) of new product development teams in supply chain creation.
* Experience with plastics manufacturing (additive manufacturing or injection molding preferred).
* Experience with multi-component assemblies.
* Strong communication and presentation skills.
* Experience using DFMEA as a tool to guide your design.
* End-to-End product development experience.
* Design or test lab experience with electro-mechanical systems.
* History of material or process cost reduction actions through value analysis/value engineering.
* Good mechanical aptitude and skills.
* Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office and general computing skills.
* Proven ability to function in a fast-paced, project-based, environment.
* Capable of effectively communicating technical concepts to team members.
* Demonstrate aptitude for learning new technologies.
* Maintain a positive attitude and embrace change in a dynamic environment.
* Exhibit strong interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).
